Dr Paul Flather spoke at an event celebrating the 75th anniversary of "The Windrush Generation", held at the Commonwealth Memorial Gates on 13 March 2023.
The Memorial Gates are located at the Hyde Park Corner end of Constitution Hill in London. The memorial commemorates the five million men and women of the British Empire from Africa, the Caribbean and the five regions of the Indian subcontinent (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) who served in the First and Second World Wars. The memorial was officially inaugurated in 2002 by HM The Queen.
Paul spoke on behalf of his mother, Baroness Shreela Flather, who is Life President and former Chair of the Memorial Gates Council. Baroness Flather was the inspiration and driving force in the creation of the Memorial Gates.
The Memorial Gates also celebrate the contribution that these servicemen and women and their descendants, members of the Commonwealth family, continue to make to the rich diversity of
British society.
This year's wreath-laying focused on the Windrush Generation, who arrived in the UK from the West Indies between 1948 and 1971.
